Employment
Teaching Assistant, University of Bath (October 2012 - present)
I am a tutor for the first year algebra module, and teach around eighteen students on a weekly basis, preparing and presenting material on the most important and difficult aspects of the course, and answering any queries the students may have about the module.
Data Matcher, RM Data Solutions (June 2012 - September 2012)
My work involved matching examination entries and results to candidates and I had to maintain accuracy while making many judgements in quick succession, learning to identify the most relevant and important information at a glance. I made most decisions individually and compared a number of examples with other data matchers to ensure consistency across the team.
Website Support, MASH at the University of Bath (October 2010 - July 2012)
I maintained the website of the Maths and Stats Help (MASH) service. I updated information in a timely manner, and maintained and improved the database which records student usage of the service, and upgraded the web booking system for appointments to allow for multiple tutors.
sigma-sw Internship, University of Bath (June 2011 - September 2011)
Alongside the staff at the Maths and Stats Help (MASH) service at the University of Bath I undertook an eight-week internship, funded by sigma-sw, looking into 'How Mathematicians Learn Maths'. I read academic papers on studies about student learning styles and used the findings to create an online resource to help mathematics students to discover how to learn better. During this process I worked closely with staff and students from four universities, assisting each other in achieving the aims of our individual projects. The resource can be found online at http://www.bath.ac.uk/study/mash/learnmaths, and an article I wrote about the project was published in the journal MSOR Connections.
Tour Guide, University of Bath (October 2010 - April 2011)
I showed prospective students around the university's facilities and answered any questions they had. By predicting the questions that might be asked, I ensured that I had all the relevant information to hand, and knew where to direct prospective students and their parents for more detailed information.
Volunteer Presenter/Computer Support, Shine FM community radio (August 2007 - September 2010)
I co-hosted a weekly show at Shine FM, preparing and delivering a range of content relevant to the local community. For over a year before leaving for university I regularly compiled a list of local events to provide helpful information to listeners and to help Shine FM meet its requirements as a community radio station.
While at Shine FM I maintained and upgraded the software used by presenters for playing music, identifying the requirements and priorities for the system, and finding and adapting software to best suit the station's needs. I also managed the music database and the overnight playlist system, and the security and logging systems I put in place are still being used by the station.
In recognition of my contribution to Shine FM, I was shortlisted for the iT4Communities IT Volunteer of the Year Award in 2009. In summer 2010 I undertook a six-week project, funded by the University of Bath, to write and record a number of short documentaries on notable people from the Banbridge area. This involved researching information as well as arranging and recording a number of interviews.
Checkout Operator, Tesco Banbridge (October 2007 - May 2008)
My job involved serving customers and handling cash. I worked two of the busiest shifts on Friday and Saturday evenings, often serving many customers at the express checkouts maintaining friendly service while working efficiently under pressure to keep fast-growing queues to a minimum.
